Shortly after Claudia and I got engaged, she shared with me that she wanted our wedding processional song to be “Goodness of God.” During this conversation, I don’t think either of us knew just how hard our engagement season would turn out to be.
As our engagement season proved to be harder than either of us expected, I got advice from a friend. He said that when things got hard, I should imagine her walking towards me on our wedding day. This would be my reminder of what we both working hard for.
During this hard season, “Goodness of God” was in heavy rotation. I would find myself listening to it all the time.
On a drive home after a nasty fight…
On our worst night of ministry…
On a date night where we only had enough money to get a “4 for $4” meal at Wendy’s (to share)…
On days when one of us wanted to call it off and walk away…
…I listened to “Goodness of God,” and imagine her walking towards me on our wedding day.
On our wedding day, what I had imagined in my mind finally actualized in front of my eyes. Surrounded by our friends and family, with “Goodness of God” playing in the background, I got to see the love of my life walking towards me. When I saw her, I couldn’t help but cry.
“She looks beautiful, doesn’t she?” My best friend and best man, Cody said to me.
She did. She looked beautiful. However, her beauty wasn’t the only thing that brought me to tears.
As I saw her walking towards me, with the “Goodness of God” playing in the background, I also saw every single time we almost walked away and chose not to.
Even though some seasons will be hard, God is still faithful and good.
