The time we are living in is forcing many to self-quarantine, social distance, and/or shelter in place. During this time it has been interesting for me to see how people have been using the internet as an antidote for isolation.
Yesterday, I was checking in with one of my best friends, Andrew Sakabu. He shared with me that even though technology was helping him stay connected with people during this time he was also learning to embrace isolation.
“Numerous faithful people in the Bible went through isolation, much worse than what we are experiencing,” Andrew told me. “And God did some of His finest work on these people during those times.”
You can slap that on a stock photo and share it on your Instagram feed. Just be sure to tag @andrew.sakabu on Instagram.
1 Kings 19 is an example of what my friend is referring to. In this section of scripture, the prophet Elijah goes into isolation out of fear for his life. It is in this isolation that he hears God’s voice. Verses 12-13 says that in a gentle whisper God asks him, “What are you doing here?”
What are you doing in your isolation?
Are you binge-watching Netflix?
Are you scrolling social media?
Are you checking news updates?
Don’t feel bad. I am guilty of doing all three…
…Today!
All I am trying to say is this: take a break from Netflix, social media, and the news. Use this time of isolation as an opportunity to hear the gentle whisper of God’s voice.
