Follow me as I follow Christ.
This paraphrase of Corinthians 11:1 has become my leadership motto. I think that it shows the irony of Christian leadership. Meaning, in order to be a good leader, you also have to be a good follower. I try to keep this in mind for my own leadership with ministry and (most importantly) with marriage.
I didn’t realize how stubborn I was until I started my relationship with Claudia. (I think she would say the same thing). We have probably had enough arguments to last a thousand marriages. However, at the end of every argument, we both eventually come to a place of humility.
As I strive to follow Christ in my marriage, I am reminded that humility is the best place to lead from. Philippians 2:5-7 reads, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (New International Version).
From a Biblical view, leadership is not about holding authority over someone else. Instead, it is all about coming under God’s authority. Colossians 3:18-23 shows us the Biblical structure of leadership. In this passage, children, wives, and husbands (though submitting to each other) ultimately all come under God’s authority.
At the end of the day, I am not the leader of my family; God is. I am thankful for the great, humble example I have in Christ Jesus.
