“We’ve always done it this way…”

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” – Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

One of my leadership pet peeves is when someone says, “We’ve always done it this way…”

There are a lot of great reasons why people and organizations should do and continue to do certain things. However, custom alone is not one of them. Custom doesn’t excite or inspire people. If someone tells me, “I’ve always done it this way…” they might as well have said, “I lack vision…”

Vision is the “why” behind what we do. It’s a leader’s purpose. It excites them and inspires others. Because of this, I am always excited to hear about why people do what they do.

Think about where you lead: family, community, workplace, and/or church). Why do you lead where you do?
