The Value Of Trust

What do successful pastors, politicians, and criminals all have in common? According to Eric Barker in his book, Barking Up The Wrong Tree, they all have the trust of their followers.

As a leader, trust is one of the most valuable commodities that you have. However, the challenge with trust is that it can be hard to get and easy to lose. Oftentimes, it’s a gut reaction or feeling that someone has towards you based on their first impression. Because of this, trust is more often earned over time rather than given out immediately.

One of the ways that you, as a leader, can expedite trust in your leadership is to be a person of integrity. I often say that, integrity is when your words and actions are congruent. It’s when you do what you say and say what you do. It’s when you practice what you preach. If you have a reputation of doing what you say and saying what you do, then the people that you lead will be more likely to trust you.

However, it’s also important to remember that if you don’t practice what you preach, then the trust that you’ve worked so long and hard to earn can quickly and easily be lost.

Think about it: What are some other ways that you can earn trust with those that you lead?
