At the beginning of each year, it is pretty common for people to set New Year’s resolutions. These are often the big goals that we want to accomplish by the end of the year, something like saving up ten thousand dollars, losing 50 pounds, or reading 10 books. However, the problem with setting big goals like this is that we don’t always factor in the small daily, weekly, or monthly habits that we need to have in place so that we can accomplish them. As a result, when we get to the end of December, we aren’t any closer to accomplishing our yearly goals than we were when we first wrote them down in January.
So this year, I want you to be able to accomplish more of your big goals. To help you do that, I’m going to explain how you can break down your big goals into smaller ones. Let’s use the example of reading 10 books. If your big goal for this year is to read 10 books, then you’re gonna need to break this yearly goal down into a smaller goal. If you break this down into a monthly goal, it works out to just under one book per month.
However, you don’t want to just stop there. You want to break this goal down even further. You can break this goal of reading one book a month into reading 50 to 75 pages a week, depending on how long the book is. And then you can break this goal down even further to give yourself a daily goal of reading 10 pages or even just 30 minutes a day, depending on how fast you read. This principle can easily be applied to any of your other goals.
- Yearly Goal: 10 books/year
- Monthly Goal: ≈ 1 book/month
- Weekly Goal: Yearly Goal: ≈ 50/75 pages/week
- Daily Goal: ≈ 30 minutes/day
When you break down your yearly goals into monthly, weekly, and daily goals, it helps you see the small steps that you need to take in order to accomplish your big New Year’s resolutions. It’s likely that you’ve heard that old Chinese proverb that says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Similarly, accomplishing your big yearly goals begins with first completing small daily goals.
Think about it: What is one of your big goals for the new year? What are some smaller goals that you can put into place to help you accomplish that?
