In my book, A Leader Worth Imitating, I discuss the importance of self-care (Principle 21). I explain that self-care is simply taking care of yourself. It’s giving yourself time to rest and recharge. Self-care isn’t just physically resting and recharging. Self-care extends to our mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
There is a misconception that self-care is selfish. After all, leaders are supposed to serve those we lead. In his book, Let Your Life Speak, Parker Palmer wrote, “Self-care is never a selfish act–it is simply good stewardship… we do it not only for ourselves but for the many others whose lives we touch” (p. 30-31). Meaning, in order to better take care of the people we lead, we first need to take care of ourselves.
Think about it: What self-care activities help you rest? What self-care activities help you recharge? How can you better take care of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health?
