Do you want to make reading the Bible a daily habit?
One of the simplest ways to start is with the Book of Proverbs.
There are 31-chapters in Proverbs. This makes it the perfect book of the Bible to use as a daily devotional.
Essentially what you do is turn to the Book of Proverbs, and based on the date, you read that Proverb. For example, if the date is February 9th, you’ll read Proverbs 9.
The Book of Proverbs is believed to be written by King Solomon. It contains many tidbits of wisdom. A modern equivalent of this could be something like a “quote-a-day” calendar.
In chapter 1, King Solomon shares the purpose for writing the Book of Proverbs:
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:2-7, New International Version.
Verse 7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,” could be considered the thesis of the Book of Proverbs.
The word “fear” could be substituted for “reverence” or “respect.” If you want to grow in wisdom, start with giving God reverence and showing His word respect.
Reading a Proverb a day will help you develop a habit of reading the Bible everyday. It will also help you learn principles on how to be a God-fearing leader.
And if you miss a day, don’t sweat it. Just move on to the next chapter. You can go over missed chapters when you re-read the Book of Proverbs the following month.
Proverbs isn’t a book in the Bible you’ll want to read just once. It’s something you’ll want to read over and over again. Day after day. Month after month. And maybe even year after year.
