As we enter the last month of the year, we also step into the first week of Advent.

Like many people, you probably have a to-do list as long as Santa’s naughty/nice list, detailing all the tasks you need to complete before Christmas in the next four weeks.

There are halls to deck, chestnuts to roast, and Christmas trees to rock around. And don’t forget the gifts – gifts to buy, gifts to wrap, and (in this economy) gifts to get price adjusted.

While your to-do list is not necessarily bad, it can be a distraction. In the midst of the busyness of Christmas, we can easily forget why we are celebrating. You may even find yourself echoing Charlie Brown: “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”

This is why Advent is important.

The word “advent” essentially means “arrival” or “coming.” Christians have traditionally observed it during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. It is considered a time to celebrate Jesus’ first coming and anticipate His second coming. Advent is also an invitation to pause and relfect on why Jesus came in the first place…

…and why He is coming again.

Over the next four weeks, I will be sharing Advents devotionals around the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love. Subcribe to my blog so you don’t miss a single one.
