What Is Humility?

In a game of word association, it is unlikely that a player would connect the word “leadership” with the word “humility.” One of the reasons might be that humility is not an overt characteristic we see in leaders. Another reason might be that we could have some misconceptions about what humility is.

In his book, Humilitas, John Dickson defines humility as, “The noble choice to forgo your status, deploy your resources or use your influence for the good of others before yourself” (p. 24).

If we break this down, we can see that there are three components to being humble.

  1. Forgoing status
  2. Using influence
  3. Prioritizing others

In Philippians 2:6-8, we see these three components in Jesus’ leadership.

While this section of scripture is often titled “Imitating Christ’s Humility” (NIV), I like to call it “Imitating Christ’s Leadership.”

(Christ), being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage” (v. 6). In this, we see that Jesus forwent his status.

“Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (v. 7). In this, we see that Jesus used his influence and resources.

“And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross!” (v. 8). In this, we see that Jesus prioritized others.

In your leadership, may you imitate the humility of Jesus.
