What is Individualized Consideration?

alt=""

There are four components to transformational leadership:

  1. Idealized Influence
  2. Inspirational Motivation
  3. Intellectual Stimulation
  4. Individualized Consideration

This post will focus on Individualized Consideration. In their book, Transformational Leadership, Bernard M. Bass and Ronald E. Riggio state, “Transformational leaders pay special attention to each individual follower’s needs for achievement and growth by acting as a coach or mentor” (p. 7). Essentially, transformational leaders show authentic interest in the wants and needs of their team.

In order to be aware of what your team wants and needs, you need to spend time with them. In my book, A Leader Worth Imitating, I discuss presence (Principle #2). I explain that being present is not just being in the same room with someone. Being present is about giving your time, attention, and interest to that person.

As a transformational leader, one of the greatest gifts you can give someone is your presence.

Think about it: How can you give your time, attention, and interest to the people you lead?
