Harry S. Truman has been quoted as saying, “Leaders are readers.”
While I wholeheartedly agree with that statement, I also recognize that reading isn’t the way everyone learns. Because of that, I’d rephrase it this way: Leaders are learners.
As a leader (and a learner for that matter), it’s essential to understand how you learn best. This is where the VARK Principle comes in.
The VARK Principle helps leaders understand different learning styles:
- Visual: Prefer diagrams, charts, and seeing how ideas connect.
- Auditory: Learn best through listening and verbal discussion.
- Reading: Prefer written text, handouts, and note-taking.
- Kinesthetic: Learn through hands-on experiences and movement.
Application Question: How do you learn best? Through visuals, audio, reading, or hands-on experience?
